Golf: Oosthuizen retains title

01/08/2012 08:09:32 PM

South African Louis Oosthuizen defended his Africa Open title, winning by two shots on Sunday.

Oosthuizen finished his four days play at the East London Golf Club with a remarkable score of 27-under which was enough to stave off the challenge of compatriot Tjaart Van der Walt.

Van der Walt, who is ranked 347th in the world, has not won in 15 years as a professional and perhaps will never come closer.

He led early in the day but was unable to keep up the momentum as Oosthuizen held on for victory, while another South African, Retief Goosen, was a shot further behind in third.

Oosthuizen started the day in a share of the lead but an early birdie was followed by a bogey and an eagle as he struggled for consistency.

Another bogey on the fifth threatened to derail Oosthuizen but he fired four birdies in his next six holes and kept his cool on the back nine to retain his title.

Van der Walt began with three birdies in succession but only added two more for the rest of his round before a bogey on the second-last hole meant he had to settle for second.

Goosen finished with a three-under 69 while Jaco Van Zyl made sure South Africa filled the top four spots on the leaderboard as he shot a 66 to claim outright fourth.

Scotland's Alastair Forsyth was next best with 22-under while South African Richard Sterne was sixth and England's Danny Willett seventh.

Lyle Rowe made it six South Africans in the top 10 as he tied for eighth with Craig Lee of Scotland.
